Dr. William Yao Named Faculty Member of the Year

William Yao, MDResidents of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth have recognized rhinologist William C. Yao, MD, as Faculty Member of the Year for 2021. Dr. Yao is an associate professor and director of the residency program, and serves as co-director of the UTHealth Rhinology and Skull Base Fellowship.

Each year, residents of the department have the opportunity to name the faculty member they feel has made the greatest impact on their learning experience. “I am truly honored by and appreciative of the residents for selecting me for this award,” Dr. Yao says. “I feel privileged to work alongside such a great group of residents and will strive to continue improving our dynamic residency program and their training experience.”

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Yao received his medical degree at the University of Colorado Health Science Center School of Medicine, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 2008. He completed residency training at Baylor College of Medicine, where he was recognized with the 2014 Resident Teaching Award. He subsequently completed a fellowship in rhinology and anterior skull base surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School.

Fluent in English and Japanese, Dr. Yao has a strong interest in surgical technique and residency education, including the development of teaching instruments. As residency program director, he collaborates with faculty members and colleagues at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and with Houston Methodist Hospital to promote leading-edge surgical education to residents at UTHealth. He has been recognized with the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award from McGovern Medical School numerous times, including in 2021.

Dr. Yao is committed to delivering leading-edge medical and surgical management for chronic rhinosinusitis and paranasal sinus diseases, and performs advanced endoscopic sinus surgery, revision sinus surgery, and skull base and orbital surgery.
