Rhinologist and researcher Amber Luong, MD, PhD, professor and vice chair for academic affairs in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, was one of two U.S.-based physicians invited to attend the meeting of the European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airway Diseases (EUFOREA), held in Brussels in summer 2023. Founded in 2015, EUFOREA is an international nonprofit alliance of stakeholders from national and international organizations, institutions, and agencies working to reduce the societal burden of allergies and airway diseases through education, research, and advocacy that leads to optimal care.
“Allergies and airway diseases are among the most common chronic conditions throughout the lifespan, and represent a major worldwide health problem with numerous comorbidities,” says Dr. Luong, who holds a joint appointment within the Center of Immunology and Autoimmune Diseases at the UTHealth Houston Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases. “Our goal at this meeting was to define terminology in light of the new biologics available for treatment and those we anticipate in the future. For instance, we discussed what control means when we talk about controlled chronic rhinosinusitis, what remission means, and what cure means. We want to ensure that as physicians we are on the same page when we describe a patient’s status.”
Based in Belgium, EUFOREA brings together specialists from the entire health care system to create opportunities for innovative thinking and the development of optimal care strategies. The organization seeks worldwide alliances to find these solutions.
