Shuhui Xu, MBBS, MRCS (Ireland), MMed (ENT), has completed a fellowship in neurorhinology and advanced endoscopic sinus surgery at the Texas Sinus Institute™ in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She will return to her position as a consultant at Singapore General Hospital.
Dr. Xu received her medical degree at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 2012. She completed residency training in otorhinolaryngology at Singhealth in Singapore, where she was recognized as Outstanding Resident in her final year. She was selected to attend the Singhealth Residency Leadership Programme, which nurtures future health care leaders.
As a fellow, Dr. Xu worked closely in clinic and in the operating room with the department’s three attending rhinologists: Martin J. Citardi, MD, professor and chair; Amber Luong, MD, PhD, professor and vice chair for academic affairs; and William C. Yao, MD, associate professor and director of the otorhinolaryngology residency program, who together serve as co-directors of the UTHealth Houston Rhinology and Skull Base Fellowship.
“The diverse skill sets of each of the three rhinologists provided synergistic training and a well-rounded fellowship,” Dr. Xu says. “Dr. Citardi’s practice employs new technology and is based on a strong foundation of surgical skills. Dr. Luong lends an academic slant with ongoing clinical trials investigating the latest therapeutics for inflammatory rhinosinusitis. Dr. Yao collaborates with neurosurgeons and oculoplastic surgeons on minimally invasive solutions for brain and orbital diseases. I gained all this experience in addition to advanced rhinology work in a wide range of cases, from clinically challenging empty-nose patients to technically challenging allergic fungal sinusitis cases.
“In addition to busy clinical practices, Drs. Citardi, Luong, and Yao serve as role models in their nonclinical portfolios as department chair, research director, and residency program director, respectively,” she adds. “I had the opportunity to work with the rest of the outstanding faculty in the otorhinolaryngology department and learn from the exceptional residents, who are testament to the success of the department as a world-class teaching institute. Overall, the fellowship has been a great experience.”
