Dr. Xiaoyang Hua Joins the Department of Otorhinolaryngology

Xiaoyang Hua, MD, PhD, FACSPhysician researcher Xiaoyang Hua, MD, PhD, FACS, has joined the faculty of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston as an associate professor.

Dr. Hua began his academic journey at Tongji Medical University in China, where he received both his MD and PhD degrees and completed a residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. During his tenure at Tongji, he excelled as a faculty member with specialized clinical and research interests in rhinology and the anterior skull base.

His quest for knowledge and innovation led him to a six-year research fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he immersed himself in the intricacies of respiratory cell biopsy, airway physiology, and immunology, resulting in numerous journal publications and promotion to a faculty position. After leaving UNC, Dr. Hua pursued advanced clinical and research training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He completed a surgical internship, research fellowship, and an additional otolaryngology residency.

In his subsequent roles as a faculty member at Duke University and the University of Iowa, Dr. Hua continued to distinguish himself as a leader in his field. He was one of three surgeons involved in a groundbreaking clinical trial for robotic insertion of cochlear implantation and holds patents pending for multiple medical devices for sinus and skull base surgery.

He is author or co-author of numerous abstracts and articles, and has been invited to give lectures nationally and internationally. He has served in editorial roles for several journals, including the Laryngoscope, International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology, Clinical Reviews in Allergy & Immunology, the Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, Acta Oto-Laryngologica, and Scientific Reports. He is a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health’s Lung Respiratory, Cardiac, and Circulatory Sciences Review Branch.

Dr. Hua is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, a member of the American Rhinologic Society and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

As a principal investigator, Dr. Hua has secured grants from the National Institutes of Health (R01, R21, and K12), Duke University, and the University of Iowa, to propel his research forward. The Hua lab investigates the immune mechanisms driving the persistence of chronic inflammatory diseases in the head and neck area.
