More than 70 physicians attended this year’s ORL Frontiers, sponsored by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. Held June 21 at the new TMC3 Collaborative Building at Helix Park at the Texas Medical Center, the annual department research symposium celebrates graduating residents, highlighting a different subspecialty each year, with 2024’s focus on rhinology.
This year’s guest of honor was rhinologist Peter Hwang, MD, professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and, by courtesy, of neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Hwang has served in leadership of the American Rhinologic Society for more than a decade, most recently as president of the society. He also serves on the editorial board of the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology and is associate editor of the World Journal of Otolaryngology. He co-edited the textbook Rhinology: Diseases of the Nose, Sinuses, and Skull Base, which was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award for Scientific & Technical Book of the Year. Dr. Hwang teaches the latest advances in endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery at national and international venues. He also trains future academic leaders in rhinology through the Stanford Fellowship in Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery. His research interests include clinical outcomes of endoscopic skull base surgery; development of innovative medical devices for treating sinus disease; and novel topical therapies for chronic rhinosinusitis.
ORL Frontiers 2024 course directors were Martin J. Citardi, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology; Amber Luong, MD, PhD, professor and vice chair for academic affairs in the department; and William Yao, MD, associate professor, co-director with Dr. Citardi and Dr. Luong of the Texas Sinus Institute Rhinology and Skull Base Fellowship and director of the Otolaryngology Residency Program.
