Five year old female with fluid in the middle ear. The air bubbles are easily seen and the fluid is thin and watery looking. Most likely the fluid will clear over the next few days.
Seven year old male, with a note from teacher and school nurse, stating that his grades have fallen off over the past two to three months. One can tell that the fluid has been in the middle ear for a long period of time because of the dark color of the fluid and the retracted ear drum.
Five year old male, with long standing fluid in the middle ear. The fluid started as thin clear liquid and became thicker and darker in color. It takes several months for the fluid to get to this appearance. Most likely this patient will need to have middle ear ventilation tubes placed in order to clear up this condition.
Nine year old male with long standing fluid in the middle ear. The fluid is almost black in color and the ear drum in thinned out and appears bulging. The white spot is an old scar.
An adult after a P.E. tube has been placed in the ear. The ear drum has some thickening which makes it appear like fluid in the ear. The ear drum is gray and healthy looking.
Adult with air bubbles in the middle ear and allergy symptoms. The fluid is thin and should clear as the allergies improve.
Teenager with air bubbles in the middle ear after a recent runny nose. This fluid should clear in the next few days, no treatment needed.
Adult with an air bubble, retracted drum and middle ear fluid. When there are air bubbles present that usually mean that the ear is starting to clear the fluid.
