On April 10, 2026, the Center for Innovation in Congenital Heart Disease (CiCHD) at UTHealth Houston welcomed members of The Graeme McDaniel Foundation (external link) Board of Directors for a special visit and discussion focused on the future of congenital heart disease (CHD) research and care.

Hosted within UTHealth Houston’s Children’s Heart Institute and in partnership with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, CiCHD is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to transforming outcomes for children and adults living with congenital heart disease. The center brings together experts in cardiology, cardiac surgery, bioengineering, regenerative medicine, and translational science to accelerate the development of innovative therapies and technologies.

During the visit, Foundation board members toured the laboratory facilities and learned about the center’s ambitious vision to advance CHD care through cutting-edge bioengineering, 3D bioprinting, stem cell technologies, and patient-specific disease modeling. Researchers shared how these emerging technologies have the potential to improve diagnosis, treatment, and long-term outcomes for congenital heart patients across their lifespan.

“The future of congenital heart disease care will be driven by innovation and collaboration,” said Foundation representatives. “It was inspiring to hear the plans for CiCHD and to see firsthand the commitment to advancing research that can make a meaningful difference for heart families.”

The visit highlighted the importance of partnerships between researchers, clinicians, and philanthropic organizations working toward a common goal: improving the lives of individuals affected by congenital heart disease. As a nonprofit dedicated to funding CHD research and supporting heart families, The Graeme McDaniel Foundation remains committed to fostering relationships with leading institutions that are driving scientific discovery and clinical innovation.

“We are grateful to UTHealth Houston for the invitation and for the opportunity to learn more about the groundbreaking work underway at CiCHD,” said the Foundation. “We look forward to following the center’s progress and exploring opportunities to support advances that will benefit the congenital heart disease community for generations to come.”

Through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to improving patient outcomes, organizations like The Graeme McDaniel Foundation and CiCHD are helping shape a brighter future for the heart community.
