Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program

Pediatric Gastroenterology cares for more than 70 patients with inflammatory bowel disease.  Headed by Dr. Fernando Navarro, we are sponsored by McGovern Medical School Department of Pediatrics and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital to be members of the national consortium Improve Care Now to develop further and improve the quality of care of these patients.

The prevalence of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing. The gastroenterology (GI) program at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston adapts to match this need through the partnership and cooperation with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

All of our GI providers take care of patients with this condition. The care for these patients is distributed throughout the city. We have satellite clinics in Katy, Memorial City, Sugarland, Clearlake, and the Woodlands, and our main campus at the Texas Medical Center.

We partner with our patients and parents from diagnosis to adult GI care. Our team knows that patients with IBD need to be followed closely, given the nature of this condition.

Our team is committed to improving the remission rate of our patients with IBD. Our program is part of the Improve Care Now (ICN) network, which focuses on ongoing improvement in care delivery to patients with IBD. As part of the ICN network, our program follows the ICN guidelines of the IBD model of care for ICN and utilizes ICN tools such as pre-visit planning and population management to better assist the patients we serve.

We are also involved in testing adjunctive therapies such as bovine immunoglobulin (Enterogram), which may impact the nutrition and disease activity of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. In addition, we will soon start participating in the trial for the use of Certolizumab Pegol in treating pediatric Crohn’s disease.
