NIRO Study

It’s difficult to check how younger children’s lungs work. Most lung tests require children to follow special breathing instructions, which younger children can’t do.

Our study uses a new, simple way to test young children’s lungs. The child breathes normally while wearing a soft mask for a few seconds. This makes it much easier to check lung health from when babies are in the hospital until they’re three years old.

Purpose & Aim

Population of the study: Children up to 3 years of age admitted at Children’s Memorial Hermann hospital or being followed up in the Pediatric High-Risk clinic or other UTHealth Pediatric Clinic
Measurements: Non-invasive oscillometry to assess lung reactance, resistance, impedance, and other respiratory parameters
Outcome: Compare lung function between term and preterm infants, track disease progression, and evaluate treatment responses
