Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital
Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is the flagship children’s hospital in the Memorial Hermann Hospital system, and is the primary training ground for the UTHealth Department of Pediatrics. It provides a full range of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty services.
Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital
Memorial Hermann Sugar Land serves as our community site. It is an 8 bed floor/ high level intermediate care unit that utilizes high flow and continuous albuterol on a regular basis. There is access to several subspecialists in person, but there is also access to all the subspecialities from Children’s Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center via phone. The inpatient unit and the ER have a very close working relationship, allowing for unparalleled communication and collaboration. The catchment area is the entire Houston area, and the patient population reflects that by being culturally and economically diverse, offering experience in working with families from multiple backgrounds and learning about community resources. MHSL is committed to education for medical learned and the community, by providing Grand Rounds for the community, participating in research and QI projects, community outreach, and journal clubs regularly.
During their time at MHSL, PHM fellows become versatile in multiple areas of pediatric community hospital medicine. They lead the pediatrics inpatient team, are responsible for all patients on the floor/intermediate medical unit, and are also involved with supervising our family practice intern and third year medical student. Fellows round with the pediatric medical team and then reconvene with the attending to discuss all plans. Given the close association between the ED and inpatient unit, fellows also aide with ED consults, provide coverage for certain procedures [including but not limited to intubation, incision and drainage, lumbar puncture, and peripheral IV insertion], and assist in pediatric codes/rapid responses. Fellows aid in daily didactics for all learners. Additionally, fellows communicate with outside pediatricians to obtain pertinent information for direct admissions and convey crucial details of a patient’s inpatient stay that will be important to the patient’s transition of care to the PCP.
The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR)
TIRR is an acute inpatient rehabilitation unit with a dedicated inpatient pediatric rehab unit. The pediatric unit is staffed by attendings from the McGovern Medical School’s Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, and Division of Community and General Pediatrics. TIRR provides comprehensive rehabilitation services for children ages 6 months to 18 years. Fellows play an active role in learning to lead the multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists, psychologists, social workers, school intervention specialists, and child life specialists.
