Summer Research

Pediatric Academic Medicine Summer Preceptorship Program (PAMSPP)

Led by Associate Professor Autumn Atkinson, MD, and Assistant Professor Wan-Hsuan “Sherly” Chen, DO, the Pediatric Academic Medicine Summer Preceptorship Program (PAMSPP) is a unique summer opportunity for rising second-year medical students to explore pediatric medicine. Over an 8-week period, participants are exposed to the broad scope of pediatric academic medicine. The program is built on five core pillars: mentorship, clinical experience, scholarly activities, education, and advocacy. Each student is paired with a faculty mentor prior to the start of the program. This mentor provides guidance throughout the summer and helps tailor the experience to best align with the student’s goals. By the end of the program, participants are expected to complete a scholarly project and present their work at the Summer Research Program Research Forum.

Applications available in January each year.

Two people talking over lunch

The PAMSPP also includes lunch with a pediatrician where participating students can have real conversations with faculty in a relaxed setting.

Texas Pediatric Society (TPS) Summer Preceptorship Program

The Texas Pediatric Society (TPS) Summer Preceptorship Program offers medical students a 2-4-week, stipend-supported clinical experience, allowing them to work alongside and observe pediatric clinical faculty at McGovern Medical School. Students have the opportunity to be paired with either general pediatricians or pediatric subspecialists. By reducing financial barriers through the stipend and providing structured, mentored shadowing in real clinical settings, the program incentivizes students to explore pediatric careers, build clinical skills, and establish meaningful connections with faculty over the summer. Professor Amalia Guardiola, MD, and Associate Professor Veronica Gonzalez, MD, FAAP, facilitate this program for the Department of Pediatrics.
