Stroke Recovery Research
Stroke is a major problem because it can make it hard for adults to move and do everyday activities. In the United States, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds. While doctors have gotten better at treating strokes right when they happen, more people are now living with the effects of a stroke. Around 800,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke each year, and there are about 7 million stroke survivors. After a stroke, people can have problems with moving, feeling things, thinking, speaking and more. At UTHealth PMR, we are actively conducting stroke recovery research, from mechanistic research in understanding aphasia to clinical research in spasticity management. Our goals are to advance understanding of pathophysiology of stroke-induced impairments and translate innovative treatments into clinical practice to facilitate recovery after stroke.
