Understanding, overcoming depression the focus of community event

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School invites the public to attend a special presentation Jan. 10 titled “Finding Hope: Understanding and Overcoming Depression,” focused on meaningful advancements in depression treatment and research with the goal of increasing awareness and offering hope.

Guest speaker Michael Thase, M.D., will discuss  He will also present the latest therapeutics, including pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy and neuromodulation. The free event will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building (1825 Pressler St.). The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session.

Thase, professor of psychiatry at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, is a leading clinician-researcher in the assessment and treatment of mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and vice chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.

This lecture is part of the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC) Visiting Professor program. McGovern Medical School was recently named a Center of Excellence member of the NNDC, a network of leading medical centers working to accelerate research, education and improved treatment options for people with depression and bipolar disorder. Support for this program was awarded through a competitive grant from the NNDC.
