Course Description
In 2023, leadership at McGovern Medical School took note of the significant gap in access to eating disorder treatment and training across the Texas Medical Center. In response, the Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, in collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics’ Division of Adolescent Medicine, established the UTHealth Houston Center for Eating Disorders.
Our Founding Director, Dr. Zach Appenzeller and Medical Director, Dr. Asha Davidson, invite you to join us for the 2025 UTHealth Houston Center for Eating Disorders Update Conference: Bridging the Gap.
This one-day conference will showcase presentations by some of the world’s foremost experts and leaders in the field of eating disorders. With an emphasis on research-supported treatment and clinical application, this conference will have joint keynote addresses and two distinct tracks: Medical and Therapy. Three joint sessions will cover the following: (1) Set point theory, utilizing growth charts in assessment and treatment, and understanding the realities of health at every size, (2) Family-based treatment (FBT): the gold-standard treatment for adolescents with eating disorders, and (3) How technology can be used to improve patient outcomes.
Our Medical track will emphasize the medical assessment and treatment of eating disorders across the outpatient and inpatient levels of care. Our Therapy track will adherently focus on additional evidence-based treatments for eating disorders, including Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT-E) for adults, and Exposure Therapy for eating disorders.
Target Audience
This conference is a call to action for all of our colleagues across disciplines of medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, nutrition, and beyond. Whether you have worked in the eating disorder field for your entire career, have never seen an eating disorder patient before, or anywhere in between, we welcome you to join us as we aim to “bridge the gap” between eating disorder specialists and non-eating disorder providers to improve detection and treatment for this clinical population.
