Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship
Welcome! Thank you for your interest in the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Our program is in the heart of the world’s largest medical center in the culturally varied, fourth largest city in the nation.
The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to provide advanced training in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of substance use disorders (SUDs) and co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
Fellows gain hands‑on experience with a wide range of substance use disorders and co‑occurring psychiatric conditions across diverse settings, patient populations, and clinical systems. The program’s structure ensures exposure to:
- High‑acuity inpatient psychiatry
- PHP/IOP behavioral treatment environments
- Long‑term outpatient continuity care
- Med‑surg, ICU, and emergency consult‑liaison psychiatry
- Community‑based opioid treatment (methadone) programs
- Patients across the lifespan, including adolescents and older adults
- Justice‑involved individuals
- Individuals with complex medical comorbidities, trauma histories, and social vulnerability
Upon completion of the fellowship, graduates are eligible to sit for the subspecialty board exam in Addiction Psychiatry offered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
Our team is committed to prepare fellows to lead with empathy, cultural humility, and scientific rigor as clinicians, educators, advocates, and innovators.
