Message from the Director
Welcome to the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
Based in the world’s largest medical complex, our ACGME-accredited, one-year fellowship delivers rigorous, high-acuity training at the forefront of addiction psychiatry. Fellows train within one of the nation’s most complex safety-net systems, managing diverse, medically and socially complex populations across inpatient, outpatient, consult-liaison, and community settings.
Core sites include Harris County Psychiatric Center (external link), the Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center (external link), and LBJ Hospital, with additional experience at a high-volume opioid treatment program providing methadone-based care and longitudinal management of opioid use disorder.
Our fellows work closely with the Center for Neurobehavioral Research on Addiction, where future treatments for substance use disorders are being investigated. This includes innovative work in pharmacologic augmentation, behavioral interventions, and translational neuroscience, with contributions (external link) to leading journals. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in ongoing funded research including studies of GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and psychedelic-assisted approaches for substance use disorders.
Our curriculum emphasizes advanced pharmacotherapy, evidence-based psychotherapies, and measurement-based care, grounded in harm reduction, integrated care, and a commitment to health equity, and incorporates innovative, cutting-edge, experiential, technology-assisted tools that support modern addiction psychiatry practice.
