Some matches are made in heaven. Others are made in Galveston, Texas.

Lily Nguyen and Viet Tran first crossed paths in July 2021 during their early weeks of medical school at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

From game nights to school events, their friendship sparked quickly. They grew closer over time and finally spent meaningful time together during a friendly beach hangout with other medical students.

Seven months later, a spontaneous trip to Boston with friends changed everything. “We couldn’t stop talking the entire trip,” Lily recalled. “From snowy walks through Chinatown to staying up until 5 a.m. packing and listening to music, something just clicked.” Since then, they’ve been inseparable, navigating medical school, rotations, and life’s ups and downs side by side. That journey came full circle when they were married on April 26, 2025.

A Shared Calling

Both Lily and Viet were drawn to medicine through deeply personal experiences. Each of their fathers was diagnosed with cancer during their adolescence. For Lily, the emotional aftermath of her father’s illness revealed a gap in how families process grief. “I felt called to understand the human mind and help others feel heard, supported, and equipped to heal, especially children,” she shared.

Viet echoed a similar sentiment: “Watching my dad go through treatment made me realize that healing isn’t just physical. Mental and emotional well-being are just as important.”

The Match Journey

Navigating the match process as a couple was no small feat. “We spent countless late nights ranking programs, balancing our individual goals with our desire to stay together,” Viet said. “Even when it got stressful, we reminded each other that no matter where we ended up, we’d be starting this next chapter together.”

When Match Day arrived, they opened their envelope side by side, surrounded by their parents. “We screamed, cried, and laughed. It was surreal,” Lily said. “We matched together, and we were coming home to Houston.”

Why UTHealth Houston?

For Lily and Viet, the Louis A. Faillace, MD, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston stood out immediately. “The warmth and authenticity of the faculty and residents made us feel welcomed—not just as applicants, but as future colleagues,” Viet said. Lily added, “The program’s strong emphasis on psychotherapy, wide-ranging clinical sites, and commitment to resident wellness made it clear this was a place where we could grow both professionally and personally.”

Looking Ahead

As they begin residency, Lily shared, “We’re looking forward to meeting a whole new set of family and friends as we continue our journey.”

Advice for Other Couples

Lily offered this advice to other couples navigating the Match: “Be yourself. This process is the culmination of years of hard work. Enjoy the interview trail—it’s like a walk down memory lane. And remember, no matter where you land, what matters most is that you’re in it together.”

Their story is one of love, resilience, and shared purpose and now, it continues at the Louis A. Faillace, MD, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
