The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) is currently recruiting faculty members at the assistant, associate and full professor levels. We are seeking adult, child and geriatric psychiatrists, as well as psychologists in multiple specialties and sub-specialties to join a diverse, dynamic and thriving department. Endowed Associate or Full Professor- McGovern Medical School, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center Houston (UTHealth) has an extraordinary opportunity for a senior scientist, with a funded multidisciplinary program of clinical care research, at the rank of a tenured Associate or Professor.

Position Key Accountabilities:

The incumbent is expected to be a recognized academic leader who will promote intellectual and ethical leadership in clinical research to advance the science through translation science or quality improvement and outcome driven clinical competencies and practices. This position will be endowed annually to support the holder’s research.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be an established thought leader in their respective discipline with a substantial scientific portfolio (including NIH & DOD funding) and has demonstrated program building capabilities and interest necessary to lead the expansion of departmental research programs. The candidate’s research focus can span any area relevant to advancing scientific knowledge about psychiatry and mental health, including but not limited to neurodevelopment, genomics, neurogenesis, digital technologies and their application in addressing clinically important questions, including but not limited to autism, clinical effectiveness, depression, and suicide.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

The UTHealth Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Trauma and Resilience Center (TRC) is hiring a Senior Social Worker to serve as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) to join their dynamic team of professionals. The TRC is a multidisciplinary treatment, research, and education center devoted to helping people who are experiencing psychological problems in the aftermath of traumatic life experiences. The center offers evidence-based, trauma-focused care for patients struggling with complex trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related behavioral health conditions. The team of expert clinicians and staff serve veterans and their families, first responders, sex trafficking victims and people impacted by disasters and other traumatic events.

As part of the UT Physicians Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic, the TRC was established to address these increasing needs, while improving accessibility to resources in the community. Informed by the latest advances in research and treatment, the center is dedicated to helping patients overcome trauma, build resiliency and improve their quality of life.

Position Summary:

Provides advanced professional work in an independent manner involving medical and psychiatric social case services to interpret social and environmental factors relating to treatment and/or research.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Interviews and screens patients to interpret social and environmental factors and medical requirements.
  2. Plans course of treatment or refers cases to appropriate professionals, institutions or agencies to ensure that patients receive appropriate treatment or referral.
  3. Obtains data from patients and/or relatives in the best interest of their problems to assist in the development of a number of significant teaching endeavors, programs, and social services.
  4. Works towards meeting total patient care.  This includes interviews with the patients and/or relatives to study the individual’s problems and needs, confers with the physician, faculty, and/or with any social agency which may have an interest in the patient’s problem, assists patients in developing an economically feasible method of planning for services, and to make psychological and social adjustments necessitated by different types of illnesses, and conducts individual and group therapies.
  5. Prepares detailed reports and may video-tape sessions with patients for review with coworkers or a faculty member.
  6. Conducts independent psychotherapies to assist the patients in achieving positive psychological and/or social adjustments and may carry administrative responsibilities for a program.
  7. Participates in teaching and staff development activities, functions as an instructor in the social work graduate student clinical practicum program.
  8. Solicits the assistance of religious, social, and welfare agencies in the treatment of patients.  Interacts with social work staff and psychiatric residents.
  9. Responds to emergency situations.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Positions

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) is recruiting outstanding PhD clinician-scientists for postdoctoral fellowship opportunities. We seek well-trained, motivated individuals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated proficiency in scientific writing, and the desire to learn the necessary skills to transition into independent faculty positions. The training period involves two years starting in September or October 2019. A key focus for the training period will be the development of successful grant planning and writing skills pursuant to applications to NIH, NSF, and private foundations.

NIH-funded investigators in the department will serve as mentors. Our strengths are in clinical service and clinical research, particularly in the fields of substance use disorders and mood disorders. Our clinical research programs are housed at the state-of-the-art Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences Building (BBSB) and UTHealth Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC), one of the largest inpatient academic psychiatric hospitals in the US with 250 acute care beds. Training and/or interest in any of the following areas is welcomed, but we strongly emphasize team science. Thus, preference will be given to individuals seeking translational training across these domains.
