How to Get Started
Accessing care at the UTHealth Houston Center for Interventional Psychiatry begins with a referral or an evaluation request. Our intake process is designed to efficiently direct patients to the most appropriate level of care and treatment pathway.
For Patients and Families
Patients and families may request an evaluation by contacting the Center directly or by submitting a referral through the designated intake process. Individuals seeking care typically include those with persistent or severe symptoms despite prior treatment, those experiencing significant functional impairment, or those considering advanced or interventional treatment options.
Once a request is received, our team will:
- Review available clinical information
- Contact the patient to gather additional details as needed
- Guide next steps, including scheduling and required records
For Referring Clinicians
Clinicians may refer patients through the electronic medical record or established referral pathways. Referrals are appropriate for patients with treatment-resistant illness, significant clinical complexity, safety concerns, or consideration of interventional therapies such as ECT, TMS, or ketamine-based treatments.
Referring clinicians are encouraged to include:
- Relevant diagnostic information
- Prior treatment history and response
- Current medications and recent clinical assessments
Our team communicates recommendations and care plans back to referring providers to support continuity of care.
What Happens Next
Following referral, patients undergo a comprehensive clinical evaluation to clarify diagnosis, assess severity and risk, and determine the most appropriate level of care. Based on this evaluation, patients are matched to outpatient care, intensive outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, or inpatient services, as well as to the most appropriate therapeutic approaches.
Our goal is to provide timely access, clear communication, and coordinated care from the first point of contact through treatment and follow-up.
