Treatment Approaches We Offer
The UTHealth Houston Center for Interventional Psychiatry offers a comprehensive range of evidence-based treatment approaches for individuals with severe and treatment-resistant psychiatric illness. Care is individualized and delivered within a coordinated, multidisciplinary framework that integrates medication management, psychotherapy, and interventional psychiatry.
Medication Management
Medication treatment is guided by careful diagnostic assessment, prior treatment history, and ongoing measurement of symptoms and side effects. When appropriate, treatment planning may incorporate pharmacogenetic testing to support medication selection and dosing. Medication management is integrated across all levels of care and coordinated with other therapeutic modalities.
Psychotherapy
Evidence-based psychotherapy is an essential component of care and is delivered in individual and group formats, depending on clinical need and level of care. Psychotherapy focuses on symptom management, functional recovery, relapse prevention, and support during interventional treatments, and is coordinated closely with pharmacologic and neuromodulation approaches.
Interventional Psychiatry
The Center provides access to a full spectrum of interventional and neuromodulation therapies, delivered by experienced clinicians within a comprehensive clinical program. These treatments are considered when standard approaches have been ineffective, poorly tolerated, or when rapid symptom relief is clinically indicated. Interventional options include:
- Intranasal Esketamine Therapy (SPRAVATO®)
- Intravenous Ketamine Therapy
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
- Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
- Magnetic Seizure Therapy (MST)
- Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)
- Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
Selection of interventional treatments is based on diagnosis, symptom profile, illness severity, safety considerations, and prior treatment response. Potential benefits, risks, and alternatives are reviewed carefully with patients as part of shared decision-making.
Integrated, Longitudinal Care
Across all treatment approaches, care is coordinated and longitudinal, allowing patients to move seamlessly between modalities and levels of care as clinical needs evolve. This integrated model supports stabilization, recovery, and long-term outcome monitoring.
Through this comprehensive approach, the Center aims to deliver timely, effective, and individualized treatment for patients with the most complex psychiatric conditions.
