Director’s Message

Welcome to the UTHealth Houston Center for Interventional Psychiatry.

The Center was established to address the needs of individuals with severe and treatment-resistant psychiatric illness—patients whose symptoms persist despite standard treatments and who require specialized evaluation and advanced therapeutic options. Our goal is to ensure that these individuals receive timely, evidence-based, and compassionate care, guided by clinical expertise and careful decision-making.

At the Center, we take an integrated and patient-centered approach to treatment. We emphasize matched care, directing patients to the most appropriate level and modality of therapy based on illness severity, safety, functional impairment, and prior response. Through coordinated outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, and inpatient services, we strive to deliver care that is both effective and responsive to each patient’s evolving needs.

The Center’s flagship clinical service is the Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) Program, which provides access to a full spectrum of interventional and neuromodulation therapies, including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), ketamine and esketamine-based treatments, and other advanced interventions. These treatments are delivered within a comprehensive framework that integrates medication management, psychotherapy, and longitudinal follow-up.

In addition to clinical care, the Center is deeply committed to education, research, and collaboration. We train future clinicians in interventional psychiatry, support visiting scholars, and contribute to research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with mood and other severe psychiatric disorders. Through partnerships at the institutional and national levels, we seek to advance both the science and practice of psychiatric care.
