Outpatient Care

Outpatient care at the UTHealth Houston Center for Interventional Psychiatry provides specialized evaluation and treatment for individuals with severe or treatment-resistant psychiatric illness who can maintain daily functioning and do not require intensive or inpatient services.

Outpatient services often serve as the entry point to care and as a step-down level following more intensive treatment. Care is individualized and delivered within a matched-care framework that emphasizes timely access, continuity, and outcomes-based decision-making.

Who Is Appropriate for Outpatient Care

Outpatient care may be appropriate for patients who:

  • Require comprehensive diagnostic evaluation or treatment consultation
  • Have persistent symptoms despite prior treatment, but are clinically stable
  • Are candidates for interventional treatments delivered on an outpatient basis
  • Are transitioning from IOP, PHP, or inpatient care and require continued support

Services Provided

Outpatient care may include:

  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and consultation
  • Medication management, including optimization and augmentation strategies
  • Evidence-based psychotherapy, delivered in individual or group formats
  • Interventional psychiatry services, such as:
    • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
    • Intranasal Esketamine Therapy (SPRAVATO®)
    • Intravenous Ketamine Therapy
    • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), when clinically appropriate

Care is coordinated among clinicians to ensure that pharmacologic, psychotherapeutic, and interventional treatments are integrated and aligned with each patient’s goals and clinical needs.

Continuity and Care Coordination

Outpatient patients are monitored regularly for symptom response, safety, and functional improvement using measurement-based approaches. When clinical needs change, patients may be stepped up to a higher level of care or transitioned to more intensive services in a coordinated manner.

Through outpatient care, the Center aims to provide specialized, accessible, and effective treatment while supporting long-term recovery and continuity across the full spectrum of services.
