Effects of Pioglitazone on Stress Reactivity and Alcohol Craving

This study is currently looking for people who:

• Are 18 years or older
• Can speak and read English
• Have used alcohol excessively in the past month
• Have mild to moderate stress and/or anxiety

Study Description:

Pioglitazone is an FDA-approved drug used in the management of type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have also shown benefits of this medication in treating alcohol and substance use disorders. This study aims to investigate how pioglitazone affects the risk of relapse triggered by stress, its effects on drinking behavior, stress/anxiety, and alcohol cravings in real-life situations for persons with excessive alcohol use. You will be asked questions about your mood, medical conditions, medications, current or past drug and alcohol use. You will also be asked to provide a blood sample.

All participants will be compensated for their time.
