Biography

Rodrigo Machado-Vieira, M.D., Ph.D., M.Sc. is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Director of the Experimental Therapeutics and Molecular Pathophysiology Program (ETP) in the Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, UTHealth, Houston. He held previous positions as the Director of the Translational Research Clinic in Mood Disorders (Biomarker’s Lab) at the Experimental Therapeutics and Pathophysiology Branch, Intramural NIMH, NIH and Professor at University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Early studies of Dr. Machado-Vieira included the identification of peripheral biomarkers in Bipolar Disorders, including BDNF and oxidative stress. In addition, his previous studies identified several biomarkers targeting plasticity and predictors of response to lithium using different tools and technologies. Dr. Machado-Vieira first proposed a key role for the purinergic system in the pathophysiology and therapeutics of Mood Disorders. At the Intramural NIMH, Dr. Machado-Vieira led diverse studies on biomarkers of ketamine’s rapid antidepressant response and the use of new glutamate modulators for the treatment of Depression and Bipolar Disorder.

At UTHealth, Dr. Machado-Vieira focuses on testing new or re-purposed, experimental agents for psychiatric disorders in Proof of Concept clinical trials. In addition, the ETP evaluates target engagement and biomarkers of response of these drugs using imaging tools and peripheral biomarkers.

Dr. Machado-Vieira has received grants and awards for his research in Mood Disorders and has an extensive record of training students at all levels, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty. Awards include the National Institutes of Health Fellows Award for Research Excellence, the Brazilian Psychiatric Association Award, the Gerald Klerman Investigator Award, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), Sao Paulo Young Investigator Research Award and the Stanley Medical Research Institute Research Award. Dr. Machado-Vieira has published more than 200 articles published, with more than 10,000 citations (h index 55).  He is Member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP)
