Psychology Services

UTHealth Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC), a 250-bed acute-care inpatient psychiatric facility, is the teaching hospital of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. The average length of stay for patients is approximately seven days, underscoring the acute nature of treatment. Patients served are diverse with regard to race/ethnicity, age, education and sociocultural background. Furthermore, patients often present with severe psychopathology. Commonly represented psychological disturbances include schizophrenia and other psychotic-spectrum symptoms and disorders, mood disorders, substance use disorders, personality disorders and various cognitive disorders.

Mission Statement

Psychology Services at UTHealth HCPC subscribes to a model of evidence-based practice, as all approaches to assessment and treatment are informed by relevant research.

Psychology Services functions as a hospital-wide consultation service. Our primary goals are to:

(1) Provide comprehensive, efficient, high-quality psychological assessments utilizing evidenced based methods.

(2) Provide evidenced-based interventions to best meet patient needs.

(3) Provide professional psychology training to Houston-area graduate students pursuing Masters or Doctoral Degrees in Psychology.

(4) Provide professional psychology training to pre-doctoral interns.

(5) Provide collaborative consultation to staff regarding milieu management, patient care and research, as needed.
