Ongoing Studies

Do you use psychostimulants (cocaine or methamphetamine)? Are you interested in participating in research that will contribute to our understanding of substance use symptoms? Are you interested in receiving a no cost experimental treatment? It is our hope that the information gained from our studies will help develop new treatments for those wanting to quit. All participants receive compensation for participating in our studies and for travel to the clinic.

Current Studies

The goal of this study is to learn more about the brain areas involved in processing rewarding, drug-related, and emotional content in order to develop potential brain stimulation treatments for cocaine use disorder.

Participants will receive the following at NO COST to themselves:
• Psychological assessments
• Electroencephalograms (EEGs) to measure brain activity
• Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) sessions
• Compensation for participation (up to $635 for completing entire study)
• Parking validation and bus passes for study visits

Who can participate?
• Men and women 18 to 65 years of age
• Currently using cocaine
• In general good health
• Able to participate in EEG and TMS sessions
• Not pregnant or nursing

The goal of this study is to test if a sleep medication called suvorexant will help with cocaine and methamphetamine withdrawal symptoms.

Participants will receive the following at NO COST to themselves:
• 8-night sleep monitoring
• 1 week of FDA-Approved medication for insomnia
• Compensation for participation (up to $162 for completing all study activities)

Who can participate?
• Men and women 18 to 65 years of age
• Currently using meth or cocaine
• Willing to attend inpatient treatment at The Right Step Houston on their own (no coverage provided by UTHealth)
• Able to take a FDA-approved medication for insomnia
• Not pregnant or nursing

The goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of two treatments, transcranial magnetic stimulation and episodic future thinking, on methamphetamine use symptoms.

Participants will receive the following at NO COST to themselves:
• One episodic future thinking (EFT) therapy session
• One transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) session
• Compensation for participation (up to $235 for completing all study activities)
• Parking validation and bus passes for study visits

Who can participate?
• Men and women 18 to 65 years of age
• Currently using meth
• In general good health
• Able to participate in brain stimulation (TMS) session
• Not pregnant or nursing
