About Us

As a part of the UTHealth Houston Behavioral Sciences Campus, we operate out of the largest academic psychiatric hospital in the country. Located within the Texas Medical Center, we are uniquely situated to provide collaborative, interdisciplinary care for patients across departments and institutions. The UTHealth Houston Center for Eating Disorders’ mission is four-fold:

  1. Clinical: We aim to provide Texas residents with the highest quality, accessible, cost-effective, research-supported treatment for eating disorders that our field has to offer.
  2. Research: We seek to engage in innovative research aimed at enhancing our understanding and treatment of eating disorders across the lifespan.
  3. Education: Our goal is to provide students and trainees across disciplines of psychology, psychiatry, adolescent medicine, internal medicine, and nutrition, with expert-led education and training opportunities in the provision of eating disorder-specific services.
  4. Community: Through our community outreach efforts, we offer education on eating disorders screening, assessment, prevention, psychoeducation, and treatment to community providers, parents, and families, as well as middle and high school students, teachers, and counselors across the State of Texas.

Philosophy

At the UTHealth Houston Center for Eating Disorders, we know that eating disorders are conditions that can be highly influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Therefore, it is our strong stance that even if developing an eating disorder may not have been a choice, that recovery from an eating disorder can be. Fortunately, our philosophy of hope that eating disorders are treatable is supported by research. When evidence-based approaches to treatment are utilized, recovery is not just possible, but probable for the majority of patients.
