Fellowship Specialty Tracks

In addition to the aforementioned general objectives of the postdoctoral program, fellows within each track will also focus on their track-specific goals and objectives noted below:

SMI Track Objectives and Goals:

  • Demonstrate advanced skills in evidence-based assessment, diagnosis, and both individual and group intervention for individuals with serious mental illness in inpatient settings, with emphasis on risk assessment, crisis stabilization, and individualized recovery-oriented treatment planning and case conceptualization.
  • Engage effectively as psychological consultants within multidisciplinary treatment teams, demonstrating leadership in case formulation, team communication, and coordination of care to enhance patient outcomes and support recovery-oriented practices in inpatient psychiatric settings.
  • Conduct family meetings, when appropriate, to provide psychoeducation, strengthen engagement, and facilitate shared decision-making aimed at enhancing treatment adherence and preventing relapse within the context of serious mental illness.

Forensic Track Objective and Goals:

  • Fellows will develop advanced proficiency in conducting post-restoration, court-ordered forensic evaluations of competency to stand trial, including clinical interviews, record review, collateral consultation, and the integration of data into clear, objective, and legally-relevant forensic reports that effectively address the psycholegal question.
  • Fellows will understand competency restoration interventions tailored to individuals with serious mental illness, and demonstrate skills in addressing functional impairments that interfere with restoration.
  • Fellows will demonstrate ethical and individualized responsive practice in forensic inpatient settings, integrating knowledge of relevant legal standards, managing dual agency roles, and addressing the intersection of mental illness, justice system involvement, and sociocultural factors impacting competency and restoration outcomes.
