Surgical Oncology Group PhotoFor many patients diagnosed with cancer, surgery remains a primary treatment option. Surgical Oncology is a subspecialty within General Surgery that focuses on the surgical management of cancer patients. The Section of Surgical Oncology at UTHealth Houston evaluates and treats patients with various malignant and benign diseases. Surgical Oncology specializes in managing patients with:

  • Melanoma/skin cancer(s)
  • Sarcoma
  • Metastatic Colorectal Cancer
  • Endocrine (Pancreatic neuroendocrine, Adrenal, Carcinoid Tumors)
  • Stomach/Gastric cancer
  • Liver/Gallbladder/Bile Duct Cancer
  • Pancreas Cancer
  • Small Intestine Tumors/Cancers
  • Chemotherapy Access Procedures

In partnership with Memorial Hermann Health System, Surgical Oncology provides advanced cancer-related surgery. We offer comprehensive, collaborative, and compassionate patient-centered surgical care from traditional open operations to minimally-invasive and robotic-assisted cancer operations.

UTHealth Houston has pioneered both a robotic pancreas and liver surgery program. In addition, we have partnered with UTHealth Medical Oncology and Interventional Gastroenterology to design and implement new clinical trials for pancreatic cancer (PANCARDINAL-1). Newer surgical techniques may improve outcomes, decrease recovery time, and help patients regain a normal quality of life.
