McGovern Medical School’s Office of Educational Programs has appointed Peggy Hsieh, MEd, PhD, the school’s first assistant dean for educator development.

Effective July 17, 2023, the aim of the new position is to cultivate a culture of teaching excellence by focusing on enhancing the teaching skills and professional growth of educators, developing effective programs, and fostering collaboration.

“Dr. Hsieh’s efforts focused on educator development are key to McGovern’s educational mission,” said Mark Hormann, MD, vice dean for Educational Programs. “Through the various programs she leads, Dr. Hsieh helps our faculty and residents develop their teaching skills. Only by developing and encouraging excellent teachers can we provide an outstanding learning environment for our students, residents, and fellows.”

Hsieh joined McGovern Medical School in 2009 and also serves as an associate professor in the Office of Educational Programs. During her tenure at McGovern, she founded the Physician Educator Certificate Program, equipping residents and fellows with the skills and confidence to teach while preparing them for academic careers. She has provided monthly educational development workshops, on-demand workshops, course design assistance, and guidance on assessment strategies.

Hsieh earned both her MEd and PhD in educational psychology from The University of Texas at Austin and has gained recognition in the medical education community as an invited guest speaker.

“In my new role, I am dedicated to creating a meaningful consultation and coaching framework with the goal of providing tailored guidance to educators, enabling them to enhance their teaching effectiveness and deepen their involvement in educational research,” Hsieh said. “Furthermore, I will persist in my efforts to design and oversee educational development initiatives geared toward empowering McGovern educators to excel in pedagogical innovations.”
