Willerson Lecture to feature Serruys

The Department of Internal Medicine presents the James T. Willerson Annual Endowed Lecture at 4 p.m., Jan. 8, in MSB 2.006.

The 2024 edition of the lecture features Patrick Serruys, MD, PhD, professor of interventional medicine and innovation at the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences at the University of Galway in Ireland. Serruys will present on “The CT Coronary Heart Team: A New Paradigm.”

Serruys is a world-renowned expert in interventional cardiology and imaging, boasting over four decades of experience in clinical trials and innovation in medicine. He has pioneered several interventional procedures and devices such as BMS, DES, BRS, and TAVI, as well as imaging techniques, including quantitative coronary angiography, quantitative IVUS, OCT, and near spectroscopy combined with IVUS.

These techniques have been used in countless pharmacological trials aiming to resolve the issue of restenosis, and Serruys has conducted more than 90 trials involving over 191,000 patients. He also developed an interest in non-invasive imaging of coronary artery disease, combining anatomy and functional assessments of CTA.

For 20 years, Serruys served as the chief of the Department of Interventional Cardiology at Thoraxcenter Rotterdam in the Netherlands, and he has been awarded several gold medals, including both the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology career achievement awards.

Additionally, he is the author and co-author of more than 4,000 peer-reviewed publications and is the author, co-author, and editor of 42 books, including the textbook of the European Society of Cardiology.

Named in honor of the late James T. Willerson, MD, the lecture is presented annually by the Department of Internal Medicine.
