Canfield receives Presidential Award from AUA
The American Urological Association honored Steven Canfield, MD, professor and CR Bard, Inc./Edward J. McGuire, MD, Distinguished Chair in the Department of Surgery and Cecil M. Crigler Distinguished Chair in Urology, as a recipient of its Presidential Citation Award.
AUA Presidential Citations are presented to individuals deemed to have significantly promoted the cause of urology. The AUA president chooses each recipient, and Canfield was chosen for over a decade of vision and leadership as director of the AUA’s Lessons in Urology course.
Canfield received the award at the American Urological Association’s Annual Meeting held May 6-10 in San Antonio.
Over the past decade, Canfield has meticulously shaped the Lessons in Urology course, fostering collaboration and elevating the field. His dedication to leading an international review course has transformed it into an essential resource for urologists globally.
For Canfield, the award symbolized personal achievement and underscored the impact of continuous collaboration and commitment to the field, making the moment a significant milestone.
Beyond McGovern Medical School residents’ participation in the AUA’s popular annual review course, the AUA’s influence extended beyond national borders. In a remarkable collaboration, the AUA partnered with urological associations from various countries to develop and sponsor international versions of the annual review course.
For the past 12 years, Canfield spearheaded one such initiative in conjunction with the Sociedad Mexicana de Urologia and the Colegio Mexicano de Urologia. Held annually in Mexico City, this course drew hundreds of residents from Mexico and Central America, forging connections that transcended geographical boundaries.
Canfield received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1996 before completing an internship (1997) and residency (2002) in surgery at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. He completed a urologic oncology fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2005 and a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy mini-fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006.
