Geriatric Trauma Symposium set for Nov. 15
McGovern Medical School and Memorial Hermann Hospital-Texas Medical Center will host the 2024 Geriatric Trauma Symposium on Friday, Nov. 15, at the Denton A. Cooley, MD, and Ralph C. Cooley, DDS University Life Center.
Held from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., the Geriatric Trauma Symposium will describe to attendees how a multidisciplinary approach to patient care leads to improved perioperative coordination and outcomes in geriatric trauma patients. Attendees will learn how to apply the guiding principles of the IHI 4Ms (mentation, mobility, medications, and what matters most) in acutely hospitalized geriatric patients and as part of safe describing practices, recognize the common side effects of high-risk medications, drug burdens, and their effects on geriatric trauma patients.
The symposium will feature five different presentations with topics including geriatric trauma outcomes; updates in delirium prevention and dementia care; dysphagia recognition and management in geriatric trauma patients; pain management strategies in geriatric trauma; and family and malnutrition. Additionally, the symposium will have two discussion panels covering topics such as The Art and Science of Pre-Operative Optimization in Geriatric Trauma and The Art & Science of Post-Operative Management in Geriatric Trauma, as well as a skill session to practice age-friendly discussions using the 4Ms framework.
