The College of American Pathologists (CAP) presented Amanda Herrmann, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, with the 2024 CAP Resident of the Year Award during a ceremony at CAP24 in October in Las Vegas.

Herrmann was recognized for her commitment to pathology and her exemplary leadership as a role model for her peers.

“Winning the CAP Resident of the Year Award means so much to me and would not have been possible without the support of my department and McGovern Medical School,” Herrmann said. “It was an honor to represent pathology residents around the country and advocate for the next generation of pathologists.”

Herrmann most recently served as chair of the Resident Forum Executive Committee (RFEC) and is currently an advisor to the committee. During her tenure on the RFEC, she proved to be an effective, inclusive leader, reaching out to international medical graduates to engage this crucial segment of medical students and residents. Herrmann presided over two well-planned, effectively executed, and educational Residents Forum meetings. During her tenure, she successfully implemented several resident project teams and was particularly effective in engaging medical students to increase the influx of pathology residents.

Herrmann further contributed as a member of the Professionalism and Ethics Project Team, the Professional and Community Engagement Committee, and as a future pathologist champion. In addition to the CAP, she is active in other pathology organizations, including the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the Association for Academic Pathology, the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies, and the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management. In her home state of Texas, she is an active member of the Texas Society of Pathologists and served as the program liaison for UTHealth Houston. She is also active in the Texas Medical Association, Harris County Medical Society, and Houston’s Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Herrmann recently completed a transfusion medicine fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital.
