Carlin increases McGovern Center’s visibility with national award
Nathan Carlin, PhD, director of the John P. McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics, has been unanimously selected as the winner of the 2025 Health Humanities Visionary Award.
He was presented the award from the Health Humanities Consortium at its annual conference in Philadelphia in April.
“The Health Humanities Consortium is the national organization most relevant for the work of the McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics, so it was a real surprise—and a great honor—to be selected for this award,” he said. “I’ve been trying to make the McGovern Center as visible as possible on the national stage, so it means a lot to me that our efforts are being noticed.”
Carlin, the Samuel Karff Chair, was selected because of his contributions to the field of health humanities, including his mentorship of emerging scholars, his work on Medical Humanities: An Introduction (the first textbook of the field), and his serving as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medical Humanities—the national journal of the field.
Carlin is a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary and earned his master’s of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees from Rice University. He has published 12 books.
The Health Humanities Consortium promotes health humanities scholarship, education, and practice that focus on intersections among the humanities, arts and social sciences in health, illness, and health care.
