The Department of Pediatrics will host the 3rd Annual Pediatric Research Symposium and the 14th Annual Pediatric Fellow Research Symposium May 21 and May 22, respectively.

The 3rd Annual Pediatric Resident Research Symposium is a free event held from 12:30-4:30 p.m., May 21 in the Memorial Hermann Conference Center in the Hermann Pavilion Atrium.

The 14th Annual Pediatric Fellow Research Symposium is also free and will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., in the Memorial Hermann Conference Center in the Hermann Pavilion Atrium.

For the fellow symposium, second- and third-year fellows submit a short abstract describing their research, and volunteer faculty review each abstract and assign grades through a blind review process. Grades are used for:

  • Second-year fellows to receive a prize for the three top-ranking fellows, which will be presented on the day of the event.
  • Third-year fellows who receive top scores are invited to present their research through a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation on the day of the event. Faculty volunteers will judge their presentation and present the top-3 participants with a plaque and a cash prize.

The keynote speaker for the Pediatric Fellow Research Symposium is Suresh Gautham, MD, professor of neonatal-perinatal medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. Gautham is the former chief of Neonatology at Texas Children’s Hospital and chair of pediatrics at Nemour Children’s Hospital in Florida. He returned to Houston to join the Division of Neonatology at McGovern Medical School to build the NICU follow-up program.
