Baxter Montgomery, MD, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, died May 24, 2025.

Montgomery was a world-renowned cardiologist, an active teacher at UTHealth Houston, where he held an adjunct appointment for over two decades and an attending physician at Memorial Hermann Hospital – TMC and the Heart and Vascular Institute. He was also a visionary in the practices of integrative medicine and plant-based prevention of disease, practicing both disciplines in his private wellness center.

Montgomery was a board-certified cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist, and founded Montgomery Heart and Wellness, in Houston. He also served as executive director of the nonprofit organization The Johnsie and Aubary Montgomery Institute of Medical Education and Research and was a long-time member of the Advisory Board for Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

A graduate of the University of Texas at Galveston in 1990, Montgomery completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in 1993 and fellowships at UTHealth Houston in clinical cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular disease in 1996 and 1997, respectively. His primary specialties were cardiovascular diseases, cardiology, heart and vascular services, and nutritional lifestyle interventions for the management of chronic illnesses.
