PECP graduates ninth cohort

The Physician Educator Certificate Program celebrated the graduation of its ninth cohort in May. This milestone included 75 residents and fellows from over 41 programs.
The Physicians Educator Certificate Program is a collaborative effort between McGovern Medical School and Houston Methodist. Led by Peggy Hsieh, Med, PhD, professor and assistant dean for Educator Development, the eight-month program helps trainees build essential teaching skills in preparation for academic careers.
Since its launch in 2016, PECP has graduated more than 450 participants and continues to foster cross-institutional learning across the Texas Medical Center.
The program is supported by Mark Hormann, MD, vice dean for Educational Programs; and Pamela Promecene, MD, associate dean and DIO for Graduate Medical Education, whose leadership has expanded its reaching and impact.
“Teaching our physicians to be medical educators multiplies the impact,” Promecene said. “Each lesson they learn echoes through countless mines. When we invest in those who teach, we shape the future at its roots.”
Hsieh said that she is continually inspired by the commitment the program’s residents and fellows bring to their development as educators.
“Their dedication reflects a true passion for teaching and a strong commitment to lifelong learning,” she said. “I hope they carry that joy for teaching with them throughout their careers.”
Hsieh also extended thanks to the program directors whose support she said helped make the journey possible.
PECP alumni have gone on to become faculty, program directors, and academic leaders, shaping the next generation of physicians. Residents and fellows looking to strengthen their teaching skills and stand out as educators are encouraged to apply for the 10th Physician Educator Certificate Program Cohort. Applications open in mid-July, and the program will begin in September 2025.
