The emotional stress from the devastation and heartbreak of the flooding in Central Texas is far-reaching, with many deeply affected here in Houston. In such distressing times, knowing where to get support can be crucial.

UTHealth Houston provides resources to support students, faculty, residents, fellows, and staff dealing with the emotional challenges associated with these tragic events.

Employee assistance and mental health support

UTHealth Houston recognizes the emotional and psychological toll that storms can take. The UTHealth Houston Mental Health and Well-being Line is a single number to quickly access confidential mental health services, available to faculty, staff, and students by calling 713-500-9888.

Additionally, through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), faculty and staff have access to confidential counseling services at no cost. Licensed professionals are available to assist with issues including anxiety, grief, and stress management.

Get up to five free visits with a credentialed and confidential counselor — virtual or in-person. Call 713-500-9888 to get started. Services also include referrals for additional care if needed.

Students can turn to the Student Counseling Services through the Office of the Dean of Students. Walk-in hours and telehealth appointments are offered, along with crisis counseling and mental health referrals.

Additional trauma and grief support

If you or someone you know are experiencing grief or trauma, or would like to speak to someone, the following resources are available:

  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Disaster Distress Helpline: Call (800) 985-5990 or text 988 to connect with a trained mental health professional.
