In honor of Chelsea Romero, MD, MPH, ’25, McGovern Medical School hosted a blood drive Aug. 25 in the Fifth Floor Gallery.

Romero experienced the life-saving effects of blood donation when she delivered her son and suffered a postpartum hemorrhage. Thanks to eight liters of blood and the care of many great clinicians, she walked out of the hospital, alive, with her son in her arms on Christmas Day.

A week after graduating from McGovern Medical School, when her son was 17 months old, she was diagnosed with Stage IV Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor, and incredibly rare and aggressive sarcoma. Instead of starting her intern year in OBGYN at Houston Methodist Willowbrook, she began chemotherapy at MD Anderson. She is driven to make memories with her son and family as long as possible.
