A message from entering Dean LaTanya Love

Welcome Dean LaTanya Love

It is with profound gratitude and great excitement that I step into the role of Dean of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston—a special place that has shaped me as a physician, educator, and leader, and continues to inspire me every day. For more than 25 years, McGovern Medical School has been my professional home, from my early days as a resident to my work in the Department of Pediatrics, the Student Health Clinic, the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs, and as Dean of Education. My recent service as interim president of UTHealth Houston has deepened my appreciation for the power of collaboration and the importance of supporting the extraordinary individuals who bring our mission to life. In each role, I have been motivated by the remarkable energy, talent, and dedication that define our vibrant community.

The students, trainees, faculty, staff, and alumni of McGovern Medical School have built a legacy rooted in excellence, fueled by innovation, and united by a deep commitment service. I am honored to help carry that legacy forward as we begin a new chapter that will include strengthening clinical programs and partnerships, training that ensures our learners are both challenged and supported, and transforming bold ideas into scientific discoveries that improve lives.

This is a pivotal moment for McGovern Medical School and for UTHealth Houston as a whole. I look forward to working alongside our new president, Dr. Melina Kibbe, whose vision and leadership will guide our institution into its next chapter. I would also like to recognize Dr. John Hancock as he steps into his expanded role as Senior Vice President for Research Strategy and Innovation. Under his thoughtful guidance as executive dean, our school has thrived, and we are fortunate to continue benefiting from his vision and expertise. I am excited to collaborate with Dr. Hancock to advance our research mission, and with each of you as we define the future of McGovern Medical School.

As your dean, my leadership is anchored in service, teamwork, and genuine connection. The best ideas often emerge from shared conversations and everyday moments, so if you see me in the hallways of McGovern Medical School or walking through Webber Plaza, I hope you’ll stop and share your thoughts, concerns, and hopes for our school.

It is the privilege of a lifetime to begin this journey with you as we transform medicine and carve the pathway to McGovern Medical School’s continued success.
