UTHealth Houston and Rice University’s Baker Institute Center for Health Policy will host “Fútbolito and Beyond: Programs, Policies, and Community Partnerships for Promoting Physical Activity in Schools” from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Levy Conference Room in the TMC3 Collaborative Building.

Fútbolito and Beyond aims to promote and advance school-based physical activity initiatives while addressing broader challenges in promoting physical activity among children, particularly in underserved communities. Experts and stakeholders will explore evidence-based solutions, best practices, and policy frameworks aimed at increasing physical activity participation in schools.

The discussion will also spotlight after-school programs such as Fútbolito for All, a soccer-based intervention led by Andrea Ramirez Varela, MD, PhD, MPH, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics. The initiative aims to promote physical activity and sports access for children, specifically targeting Latino youth and low-income communities.

Fútbolito and Beyond will feature presentations from Varela and Eric Boerwinkle, PhD, dean of the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health and M. David Low Chair in Public Health and Kozmetsky Family Chair in Human Genetics. The keynote speaker for the event is Precinct 2 commissioner Adrian Garcia.
