AI in Medical Education

McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston launched a new initiative this fall to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can support teaching, learning, and daily work across the institution.

“What has made this effort so special isn’t just the technology but the way it has brought our community together,” said Peggy Hsieh, PhD, MEd, professor and assistant dean for Educational Development.

The effort, which began in September, has included a series of Zoom sessions led by 30 presenters representing faculty, residents, and students. Open to all faculty, trainees, learners, and staff, the sessions highlight practical uses of AI in medical education while encouraging collaboration and discussion.

In the first three sessions alone, more than 100 participants joined to ask questions, share insights and build on one another’s ideas. Organizers said the enthusiasm demonstrated by the medical school community has been central to the program’s success.

“What’s clear is that the McGovern Medical School community is learning, leading and shaping what the future of medical education with AI can look like,” Hsieh said. “By focusing on authenticity, showing what works, what doesn’t and what’s possible, we are building a community where ideas can be exchanged freely and learning can grow.

“This initiative has shown that McGovern Medical School is not just keeping pace with AI—it is strengthening its community by learning together, supporting one another and inspiring new ways to teach and grow.”

The initiative will continue through November, with additional sessions scheduled in the coming weeks.
