D-CFAR seeking pilot grant applications
The Texas Developmental Center for AIDS Research (D-CFAR) is seeking applications for small pilot grants. The three-page application is due by Nov. 3, 2025. Proposals are welcome in all areas of HIV/AIDS basic, clinical, behavioral, substance use, aging, and implementation science research.
Projects will have an anticipated start date of Jan. 5, 2026, and must be completed before March 31, 2026. Early stage investigators or established investigators mentoring an early stage co-investigator from a D-CFAR institution are able to apply. Up to $25,000 may be requested, and indirect costs and subcontracts are not allowed. Additionally, clinical trials are not allowed.
The Texas D-CFAR is particularly interested in projects aligned with its overarching theme, “Ending HIV and Optimizing Health in Texas.” All proposals must already be IRB- and IACUC-approved at the time of application.
Applications must include:
- Cover letter that states principal investigator(s), institutions of investigators, project title, and requested budget.
- Project summary/abstract (limited to 30 lines of text) on a separate page.
- For early stage investigators, indicate on the project summary or abstract page whether you have a research mentor or would like the D-CFAR to assist in matching you with an appropriate mentor.
- Lay language summary (limited to 30 lines of text) on a separate page.
- National Institutes of Health biosketch for all key personnel.
- Facilities and other resources; equipment.
- Budget (direct costs only) and budget justification. Indirect costs are not allowed.
- Research plan – Specific aims (one-page limit) and research strategy (two-page limit. Include sections for significance, innovation, approach, and use of Texas D-CFAR cores. Include a brief statement of plans to transition pilot project to NIH-funded project (limited to 30 lines of text).
- References cited.
- Human subjects, if applicable. IRB approval cannot be pending. If IRB approval is required, the approval letter must be attached. In addition, submit description of human subjects’ involvement, risks to human subjects, adequacy of protection against risks, potential benefits, and importance of knowledge to be gained.
- Vertebrate models, if applicable. IACUC approval cannot be pending. If IACUC approval is required, the approval letter must be attached. In addition, submit description of models; justification for using models; interventions to minimize discomfort, distress, pain, and injury; and euthanasia method.
- Letters of support from co-investigators and collaborators, if applicable. Letters of support from D-CFAR cores whose services are essential for the project should be included.
The D-CFAR Developmental Core can assist early stage investigators in identifying mentors for pilot applications and career development. Additionally, the D-CFAR Community Advisory Board is available to support applicants developing projects involving community engagement.
