New GlobalProtect VPN to offer enhanced reliability, secure access
UTHealth Houston is installing the new GlobalProtect virtual private network (VPN) to upgrade remote network access and deliver better performance for working remotely.
The upgrade, which replaces F5 Big-IP, will provide improved reliability, fewer interruptions, and smoother connections, along with enhanced security.
What you need to know
- IT is installing GlobalProtect VPN on all university-owned and managed devices that currently have the F5 Big-IP VPN, with the goal of completing all installations by Thanksgiving.
- You will know when GlobalProtect has been installed through the following two indicators:
- When restarting your computer, a UTHealth Houston network login window will appear for GlobalProtect VPN.
- The GlobalProtect app will be appear when you search for it in the Start menu, or when you select it from the system tray.
- The login and connection process for GlobalProtect VPN is nearly the same to that of F5 Big-IP. GlobalProtect uses a UTHealth Houston network username and password window, and users must log in with their UTHealth Houston network credentials.
- GlobalProtect VPN will look different and have a new name, but the transition is virtually seamless. Use GlobalProtect as you would F5 Big-IP. It is safe and authorized by the university; there is no need to report it to IT.
- The F5 VPN is scheduled to be decommissioned, but it will remain available during the transition period as a backup until all users have migrated to GlobalProtect. Please use GlobalProtect instead of F5 Big-IP as soon as GlobalProtect becomes available on your computer.
- If, for any reason, the installation does not occur automatically by Thanksgiving – or if you need to install GlobalProtect on a personal computer or mobile device – refer to the GlobalProtect Installation Guide for step-by-step instructions.
