From tragedy to tradition: The Henry Strobel Retreat
What began as a response to chaos and uncertainty in the aftermath of a devastating flood has grown into one of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston’s most enduring traditions.
The Henry Strobel Retreat, now a decadeslong rite of passage for incoming medical students, traces its origins back to 1976, when flooding in the Texas Medical Center disrupted the start of the academic year and left students searching for connection amid the confusion.
On June 15, 1976, more than 10 inches of rain fell across central Houston, flooding portions of the newly constructed medical school building and forcing faculty and students into temporary classroom and anatomy lab spaces.
According to alumnus Joel Dunnington, MD, students and staff even used SCUBA equipment to retrieve cadavers and anatomy lab materials from the flooded basement.
“The flood delayed the onset of school that year, and students who were part of an ethics discussion group that met at my house began talking about how the flood was influencing students’ attitude of the school,” remembered Henry Strobel, PhD, assistant dean for student affairs at the time. “We started organizing and held our first student retreat for the incoming class in 1977.”
The retreat was designed to address something deeper than logistics. Students and faculty recognized a growing disconnect among classmates navigating the pressures of medical school in an unfamiliar and stressful environment. Under Strobel’s guidance, students envisioned a retreat away from the Texas Medical Center where incoming students could bond before classes intensified.
That vision became reality at Camp Allen in Navasota, Texas, where the first freshman retreat was held in 1977. Sixteen faculty members and students helped organize the inaugural event.
Over the years, the retreat evolved into a signature experience for generations of McGovern Medical School students. While activities and themes changed, from athletic competitions and faculty panels to elaborate themed skits and costume parties, the retreat’s mission remained the same: building camaraderie, mentorship, and community.
“The retreat is all about bonding. We show the new students that we’re a part of you, you’re a part of us,” Strobel once said. “The goal is to get the students to know each other, and the result is that they are having fun.”
Student leadership became central to the retreat’s identity. Organized largely by second-year students known collectively as the “Janitors Committee,” the retreat became known for its highly coordinated skits, games, and traditions that welcomed incoming students into the culture of the school. Faculty participation also helped break down barriers between students and educators.
“Faculty interaction and participation makes the faculty more approachable and more human,” said Mark Farnie, MD, professor of internal medicine, in a historical feature on the retreat. “What made me want to come to this school was the approachability of the faculty and the camaraderie of the students.”
For many alumni, the retreat remains one of the defining memories of medical school.
As the retreat entered its fourth decade, alumni and school leaders began working to ensure the tradition would continue for future generations. In conjunction with the McGovern Medical School Alumni Association, efforts were launched to establish and grow the Henry W. Strobel, PhD, Freshman Retreat Fund to help keep the retreat affordable and sustainable for students.
McGovern Medical School alumni and supporters have continued investing in the Henry W. Strobel, PhD, Freshman Retreat Fund. The fund helps keep the retreat accessible for students while supporting the mentorship, connection, and lifelong friendships that have defined the experience since 1977.
Today, the Henry Strobel Retreat stands as more than a weekend tradition. It represents the culture of connection, mentorship, and resilience that has shaped McGovern Medical School since its earliest years.
