The countdown is on for the 50th Henry W. Strobel Retreat
On July 31, the Class of 2030 at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston will gather for the 50th Henry W. Strobel Retreat at Camp Cho-Yeh in Livingston, Texas.
For generations of students, the retreat has marked the beginning of medical school—not with lectures or exams, but with friendships, faculty mentors, and memories that last long after graduation.
This year’s retreat will give students plenty of opportunities to get to know one another through paintball, archery, basketball, kayaking, sand volleyball, lawn games, and time to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Beyond the activities, the weekend is designed to help students build the relationships and support networks that will carry them through medical school.
Named for beloved faculty member Henry W. Strobel, PhD, who founded the retreat in 1977, the retreat is organized each year by second-year student leaders with support from faculty. Together, they carry forward a tradition of camaraderie and belonging that extends well beyond a single weekend. For many alumni, the retreat remains one of their defining memories of the medical school.

As the retreat reaches the half-century mark, UTHealth Houston alumni have come together to create a special matching gift opportunity that will help keep the experience affordable for incoming students through gifts to the Strobel Retreat Support Fund (external link).
Reaching the $25,000 fundraising goal will unlock this alumni-supported matching gift, doubling the impact of every contribution.
Every gift helps ensure future classes can experience the same welcoming tradition that has shaped generations of McGovern Medical School students.
