MHH ACE Unit
Acute Care of Elders (ACE) Unit
The ACE Unit is a specialized hospital unit designed for older adults. Our goal is to treat acute medical issues, prevent complications during hospitalization, and ensure a safe, successful discharge that meets the needs of both patients and families.
What Makes an ACE Unit Different?
Unlike a regular hospital floor, the ACE Unit offers:
- Team-Based Care: Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, nutritionists, and social workers work together.
- Geriatric Expertise: Nurses are specially trained in caring for older adults.
- Consistent Staff: All staff are dedicated to the unit for better communication and continuity.
- Medication Safety: Pharmacists review every patient’s medications to prevent side effects and drug interactions.
- Comfortable Environment: Rooms are designed to promote independence and faster recovery.
Benefits of ACE Care
Patients in an ACE Unit often experience:
- Better physical function at discharge
- Faster diagnosis and treatment of depression
- Improved pain control
- Higher patient and family satisfaction
- Lower risk of pressure ulcers
Safety Features for Older Adults
The ACE Unit is designed with older adults in mind:
- Non-glare floors and shades to reduce visual strain
- Grab bars in bathrooms for safety
- Showers that fit a chair for easier bathing
- Black toilet seats for better visibility
These features help reduce falls and make hospitalization safer and more comfortable.
