2020
Greetings from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
You may be surprised to see me as executive dean, ad interim for the Medical School, but it is a position I have held since our former dean Barbara Stoll, MD, departed in July 2020. I have had the privilege of being the chair of our Department of Surgery since 1994, and I joined the faculty in 1985 as a professor of surgery and the director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery.
I am pleased to have been a part of our McGovern Medical School’s history and have been so proud of our faculty, staff, students, residents, and fellows during these past two pandemic years. As you will read in this publication, the Medical School persevered and even flourished during these trying times. We pivoted to embrace technology across all sectors of our missions and continue to work to manage the emotional toll this pandemic has wrought.
Our highlights include the construction of a new psychiatric hospital, and an increase in our total research funding. Yes, these are difficult times, but the resilience of this Medical School and its importance to this community are unequivocal.
We thank you for your continued interest and support.
