Launched in 2019, Life & Work is a podcast-like series from Rev. Nathan Carlin, PhD, McGovern Center director and Samuel Karff Chair. In each episode, Carlin speaks with intellectuals and writers about the relationship between their personal lives and public scholarship.

The 5th episode of Life & Work features a conversation between Carlin and Samuel Shem, the pen-name of Stephen Joseph Bergman, MD. Trained in psychiatry, Shem wrote the novel, The House of God (1978), about his experiences during internship at Beth Israel Hospital (now Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center). Shem has published several novels, plays, and essays. His works include Mount Misery (1997) and Man’s 4th Best Hospital (2019).
